In the race to provide quality online content, Google
and HarperCollins
have been left at the gate
Praeger Security International (PSI), has outperformed
the competition—combining the best of print with the access and
organization of a sophisticated online database.
PSI, an imprint of Greenwood Publishing Group, has set the Internet
industry model for combining the best of print with the access and organization
of a sophisticated database—expertly indexed and cross-searchable,
starting with over 500 books, original analysis on important and regional
events written by today's leading scholars and experts, over 1,000 primary
documents, a world-wide chronology of terrorism and political violence
events, and a carefully prepared annotated bibliography.
Rather than adopting Google's digitize-everything-it-can model, or Random
House's strategy of publishing strictly its own products, PSI will launch
Praeger Security International Online (PSIO), an innovative and flexible
delivery format, with free trials beginning in March 2006.
PSIO will serve the needs of students, researchers, journalists, and
other professionals who need quick and efficient access to quality information
on the world's most important issues and events.
This constantly evolving Web site will present international and interdisciplinary
voices representing a diverse range of political perspectives on international
security issues, including:
- Defense and National Security Intelligence
- Terrorism and Nontraditional Threats
- Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Humanitarian and Peace Operations
- Military History and Regional Security
- Armed Forces
- Military Affairs
- Strategic Studies
- Proliferation
To help maintain this focus, PSIO established a special Advisory Board
to oversee its work:
Loch K. Johnson
Co-Chair: University of Georgia
Paul Wilkinson
Co-Chair: University of St. Andrews

PSIO's program—maintained, organized, and indexed by subject-specialist
librarians—eclipses the competition's programs via additional value-added
features such as:
Monthly Commentaries
Written by scholars and experts, these articles will provide a focused
treatment of newsworthy events and important historical occurrences.
These commissioned pieces will be permanently archived and cross-searchable.
Early commentaries include pieces from Alan Gropman (Integrating the
Armed Forces), John Haseman (Reforming the Indonesian Armed Forces),
and Loch K. Johnson (Intelligence and Privacy).
Regional Analysis
Similar to commentaries but with comprehensive coverage, these articles
focus on major events as they relate to specific countries within regional
contexts or regions within a global context. Commissioned analysis for
2006 include pieces from Ewan Anderson (Kashmir), Sean M. Maloney (Afghanistan),
Joseph Siracusa (Australia and East Asia), and Robert J. O'Neill (East
Asia).
Primary Documents
An archive of carefully selected primary documents support titles in
the database and provides authoritative and timely material on all facets
of international security with special emphasis on terrorism and irregular
warfare, strategic studies, defense and foreign policy, regional security,
and military history. Specialty librarians and PSI authors continually
provide feedback on materials most relevant to PSIO users.
Chronologies: Starting with Terrorism and Political Violence
(National and Inernational)
Professionally assembled, comprehensive and up-to-date, this chronology
lists and organizes terrorist incidents from around the world from 1968
to the present, with background information that stretches back more
than 75 years. National incidents include everything from bombings at
abortion clinics to acts by eco-terrorist groups.
Annotated Bibliography
An authoritative and scholarly bibliography assembled by one of the
top scholars in the field (James Forest; USMA, West Point) provides readers
with invaluable guidance on the most important articles and books on
terrorism and related topics.
Indexin g and Search Option
The PSI Web site features an innovative index created by subject-specialist
librarians. Using Library of Congress subject headings as a framework
for standardization, but augmented with numerous additional headings
and subheadings, the index was assembled to facilitate access to the
vast amount of content available on the site.
The ever-growing index is currently comprised of over twenty
thousand lines, including seven thousand primary subject headings and
thirteen thousand subheadings that provide multiple access
points to the main database content. Subject matter experts directly
applied the indexing terms to the content as metadata to provide researchers
with significantly increased relevancy.
The database will also allow for Boolean operators and has a free form
search box. It will be possible to limit searches by data type and chronological
period. Search results will be displayed by relevancy but with a variety
of sorting options.
PSIO is designed to make the most current, in-depth information available
with the click of a button.
